3-D Printed Chess Pieces

Image
3-D Printed Chess Pieces April 2nd, 2024 Idea Exploration/Sketches: I originally had a completely different idea, but when I started modelling the bases of the chess pieces I thought "huh, that kind of looks like a lava lamp", so I just sort of took that and ran with it. The pieces aren't the structure of the lava lamp, but rather the look of the bubbles inside as they float all around. I wanted to make sure every piece was different, not just in height but in structure as well, because you're never going to see a lava lamp produce the same results twice. Modelling: I didn't really stick to exactly what was planned in my sketches. I sort of just played around with it to see what looked good. For most of the pieces I constructed them in top view and revolved most of the elements, then went in and added a bunch of little spheres and bubbles to the outside of the pieces to give them a more "lava lamp" type look. << king << queen << bishop

Ring Exploration

Ring / Shapeways Exploration March 19th, 2024 Lengthwise Ring Band: Just made it very simple, I think the star detail is cute and I would wear this for sure. Ring - Shaded View Render: For some reason my perspective view has been weird lately and not letting me zoom past a certain point? So unfortunately this is the most zoomed-in render I could get. Shapeways:  This is absolutely cheaper than I thought it would be. Really cool though! Definitely something to keep in mind.

Reverse Engineered Object: HD Renders and Exploded View

Reverse Engineered Object: HD Renders and Exploded View March 17th, 2024 Here we are, the final blog post on my reverse engineered object. The earring has been completed! Exploded View:  Wasn't exactly sure how to format this exploded view as everything is pretty much just strung onto the wires, so I hope this works. The renders were on a high quality but still seem a bit grainy for some reason, not quite sure what’s going on with that.  Full Object View:  Sunlight at 0.50 with a pin light above.  Close-up on beads:  For the close up of the beads, I used a blue point light on one side and a purple on on the other side which created a fun gradient on the beads. Close up on safety pin:  The safety pin close-up close up has both a purple point light, a pink point light and a spotlight up above, I liked how the pink light could be seen on the inside of the safety pin. Earrings on display:  For this render, I decided to put the earrings on a little cardboard backing, as if they were

Reverse Engineered Object - Progress II

Reverse Engineered Object - Progress 2 March 11th, 2024 This week, I continued to make progress on modelling my Safety Pin Earring. I'm happy with my progress so far. Some problems I've run into this week: Not too many issues I've come across this week, I just am finding it time consuming to line up my objects. The safety pin uses the pipe tool, so I can't easily just snap the beads to the center. The safety pin is also not a straight wire that the beads are fed onto, it's a bit curved so it just has taken a lot of focus and a close eye to align them.  Still don't quite know how to make the end of the safety pin but will experiment more with it this coming week.  Closed curves! Some of the more complicated objects have a lot of polylines involved and are sometimes not fully connected or maybe didn't snap together, so when I try to extrude a surface or join something, I get error messages. I think I just need to pay more attention so I don't run into any
