Reverse Engineered Object: Selection

1. Safety Pin Earring: I chose this one because I think it's more playful and personal than the next two I selected. I think I could get very accurate measurements and it would still be a challenge for me to model. I also selected this object because in learning how to model the earring back and the clasp and the more structural parts of the earring, perhaps in the future I can use that design to make/3D print earrings of another variety. Both the earring hook and the safety pin feature some spiral elements that I look forward to experimenting with because I honestly have no idea how to approach that.

2. Tape Measure: This one has a lot of components. Between the screws, the outside of the tape measure and the measuring tape itself, I would have a lot of opportunities to experiment and troubleshoot how to model this. The outside of the tape measure looks intricate on both sides and features a lot of circles, which is a shape I tend to have an easier time modelling. I also chose this one because it is a small object and I would not have to worry about the model not fitting on the grid in Rhino.

3. Puffer: This is a really old, really expired puffer that I probably got like 10 years ago. If I were to model it I would 100% take the labels off. I chose this as one of my three possible objects because I think it has some cool organic shapes that could be interesting to design. It has a lot of details on the back, like little line cutouts and rounded edges. While I write this though, I'm thinking that I might pass on this one because I think it would be really difficult to measure the mechanism inside where the air canister connects to the outer tube. It is very small and I know I would not be able to get accurate measurements. I think this is probably the simplest of the three objects I chose and I might like a bit more of a challenge.

I think I have settled on designing the safety pin earring for this project. It could also be fun to change the colour of the beads or the letters just to spice it up a bit and add a bit more personality too it. Plus, this is definitely a more personal object (I mean, it literally has my name on it.) so I am a bit more drawn to want to recreate it.

Reverse Engineered Object: Progress I March 4th, 2024 This week I started to measure and model the paper clip earring I had chosen in my last post. I completed all of the measurements and rough sketches (although I must admit that my measurements page is pretty disorganized). It was a difficult object to measure as it is so tiny, but I tried to be as accurate as possible. Some issues I have run into so far: How to model springs? For some reason, after creating the structure of the bead, I was unable to create the open cylinder in the middle with the Shell command. Maybe some of my curves aren't fully closed? I'm not sure. Trying to wrap my head around how to model the organic curves of the paperclip. Earring Hook:  After modelling the structure of the earring hook in top view, I started to extrude the separate pieces. Then width of the wire used for the hook is 0.24mm, so I used the circle tool to create a circle with a diameter of 0.24mm, then used the sweep tool. Then I added

Reverse Engineered Object: HD Renders and Exploded View

 Reverse Engineered Object: HD Renders and Exploded View March 17th, 2024 Here we are, the final blog post on my reverse engineered object. The earring has been completed! Exploded View:  Wasn't exactly sure how to format this exploded view as everything is pretty much just strung onto the wires, so I hope this works. The renders were on a high quality but still seem a bit grainy for some reason, not quite sure what’s going on with that.  Full Object View:  Sunlight at 0.50 with a pin light above.  Close-up on beads:  For the close up of the beads, I used a blue point light on one side and a purple on on the other side which created a fun gradient on the beads. Close up on safety pin:  The safety pin close-up close up has both a purple point light, a pink point light and a spotlight up above, I liked how the pink light could be seen on the inside of the safety pin. 2. Surface Design Study

Project 2: Surface Design Study Research:  My friend and I went to browse Walmart to see what we could find. The bedding section really inspired me. I didn’t feel very connected to any super complicated patterns or many with curved lines. I found one bed spread with a detached hexagon sort of pattern, and I thought “I wonder what that would look like as a diamond shape, so that’s where I drew my inspiration for the more geometric part of the pattern.  When we reached the clothing section of our design scavenger hunt, I found this cute little dinosaur pattern. I thought “that could be cool” but I doubted that I would actually be able to construct a dinosaur with my limited experience with Rhino. I couldn’t get the dinosaur idea out of my head, so that is what I decided to go with. I regret not getting a picture the original pattern, but it was just a very simple dinosaur pattern on a pair of kid’s pajamas.  This project really proved to be a challenge for me.
